Douglas Pike Collection: Other Manuscripts - Accuracy in Media
Media Type:
Finding Aid
Description:
Accuracy in Media Video Development Collection (Douglas Pike Collection) Description and Scope of the Collection The Accuracy in Media (AIM) Video Development Collection documents the efforts of Peter Rollins to develop a video documentary on the role of media in the Vietnam War. The film began as an independent production by Dr. Peter Rollins, an English professor at Oklahoma State, and two colleagues. Rollins. original goal in his research was to make a statement about the media coverage on the Vietnam War, but with particular emphasis on the Tet Offensive and the battle of Khe Sanh. The project members conducted their research in the late seventies largely at a conference held by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the United States Marine Corps archives. The project evolved over the years, changing names and shifting focus. The film project enjoyed grant funds until completion in 1982. However, the product must not have pleased Rollins. In 1984, he received a generous fellowship from Accuracy in Media, Inc., apparently to refine the film. The documentary became a two part series. The first program, .The Real Story., was an effort to rebut the PBS series, Vietnam: A Television History and the second program, .The Impact of Media., addressed the impact of media on the Vietnam War. Rollins completed the video for distribution by AIM in 1985. The collection separates into eight series. .Interviews. composes of primary materials and .United States Marine Corps. mainly offers guidance materials to the Marine Corps archives photo and oral history collections. Grant applications largely comprise .Finances. and .Correspondence. consists of letters that advise and analyze Rollins. project. .Video Production. provides some of the details of the project.s development, while .Publicity. is self-explanatory. The last series, .Accuracy in Media., dates from Rollins. association with AIM and mostly documents the evolution of the final scripts. The materials in the collection could be valuable to a researcher concerned with attitudes toward media. Also, the files are beneficial because they include 35 unique interview transcripts with Tet combatants and many notable scholars and officials, such as Peter Braestrup, Douglas Pike, William Westmoreland and Walt Rostow. Biography and Provenance Professor Pike was born in 1925. He served as a journalist in the Army during World War II(in the Pacific Theater of Operations) and during the Korean Conflict. He earned degrees from the University of California-Berkeley and American University. He served as an FSO in Taiwan, Korea, Lebanon, and Vietnam. In 1982 he began teaching at UC-Berkeley and in 1997 moved Texas Tech University. Professor Pike housed and supported the Collection until 1982 when he moved it to Berkeley. It remained there until 1992 when Berkeley considered discontinuing its support for the Indo-China Studies Project. After being approached by Professor Pike, Dr. James Reckner, Director of the Vietnam Center at Tech, and Dr. David Murrah, Assistant Director of Libraries for the Special Collections, worked together to bring the Collection to the Archive in 1994. Finding Aid for the Douglas Pike Collection: Other Manuscripts - Cartoons
Collection:
Douglas Pike Collection: Other Manuscripts - Cartoons
Media Type:
Finding Aid
Scope and Content:
The Cartoon Section of the Douglas Pike Collection consists mostly of political cartoons related to the Vietnam War. Many of the cartoons are from the period of the war itself, but some are post-1975 including the 1990s. The cartoons are organized topically, with by far the largest division being the general category of those which deal with the war itself. This section includes a small book titled "Verdicts on Vietnam," published in 1968. A small proportion of these cartoons have been separated into a different folder because they are of Southeast Asian origin or are from somewhere besides the United States or Southeast Asia. Those which deal specifically with Cambodia, Laos, or Thailand, and those which deal with refugee matters, have been put in a different folder. The next major division consists of cartoons which relate to the domestic American debate over the war. The idea behind this category is that the cartoons address the debate over the legitimacy of the war, not the war itself, including U.S. or Vietnamese strategy, tactics, etc. Some of the material in this division involves the war as a political issue--for example, how presidents Johnson or Nixon attempted to persuade Congress and the public to support the war effort. Other material covers war protesters or draft card burners and the debate over the legitimacy of anti-war demonstrations. Still other cartoons address the publication of former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara's book In Retrospect. Another major division is cartoons which are not directly related to the Vietnam War. Many of these are of interest because they are of Vietnamese origin and address political, cultural and economic issues within Vietnam either during war time or after. Others concern American politics during the war years, and still others are simply miscellaneous. A final division consists of cartoons by H. S. Nguyen. These are good quality, recent sketches which are mostly in Vietnamese but include some English in the captions.

Finding Aid for the Douglas Pike Collection: Other Manuscripts - Ellsworth Bunker Papers
Collection:
Douglas Pike Collection: Other Manuscripts - Ellsworth Bunker Papers
Media Type:
Finding Aid
Scope and Content:
Description (Excerpt from Douglas Pike's Introduction in The Bunker Papers): When President Lyndon Johnson, in the spring of 1967, asked Ellsworth Bunker to become his ambassador in Saigon, then the largest and in some ways most important American embassy in the world, Bunker stipulated as one of his conditions for acceptance that he always have direct access to the President. It was agreed this access would take the form, in part, of a weekly (later, monthly) "back channel" cable from Bunker to the President. Such messages by-passed the standard distribution system within the U.S. government's communication network that included the State Department, the Pentagon, and the CIA (although these agencies and others did receive copies of the cable after the delivery to the President). The intent of the "back channel" message was to assure a direct Bunker-to-President link that no one could short-stop. It was a singular arrangement in the intracommunication process within the U.S. government. Scope: (Excerpt from Douglas Pike's The Bunker Papers) In all there were ninety-six such messages from Bunker to the President, the first dated May 3, 1967, and the last May 5, 1973. Collectively, they form a historical documentation of extraordinary value. They are, by far, the most detailed chronological accounting of events, particularly within the South Vietnamese governmental and political scene, that we are likely to get. They cover the key years marked by the Buddhist demonstrations, the "government by coup d'etat" period, the rise of the political fortunes of generals Nguyen Cao Ky and Nguyen Van Thieu, the 1968 Tet offensive, and the launching of the Paris talks. Box 1 of the collection contains copies of the originals numbered as they appear in the published account and in chronological order. Box 2 contains copy of the material as it became ready for publication. Box 2 also contains Pike's correspondence regarding the publication of the book. Note: (Excerpt from Douglas Pike's The Bunker Papers) In 1988, the University of California's Institute of East Asian Studies, under the Freedom of Information Act, obtained copies of the original telegrams. The Institute's Indochina Studies Project proposed publication as a contribution to the scholarship of America's involvement in the Vietnam War and as a lasting tribute to Ellsworth Bunker, one of the great and truly humane American ambassadors of this century. Subsequently, publication was made possible by a generous grant from The Asia Foundation, headquartered in San Francisco.

Finding Aid for the Douglas Pike Collection: Unit 02 - Military Operations
Collection:
Douglas Pike Collection: Unit 02 - Military Operations
Media Type:
Finding Aid
Scope and Content:
The contents of this unit are reportorial in nature covering the day to day events of the war from the perspective of combat operations. The tone of these materials is to relate what happened on the battlefields of Vietnam with little analysis as to why certain policies were followed or how successfully they were pursued.. Since combat operations are conducted in an arena influenced by political and diplomatic factors, a certain amount of attention has been devoted to these subjects as well. Here again, however, the goal is more to report such events and their relationship to field operations rather than to analyze them. Primarily, the items in this unit consist of US, North and South Vietnamese journalistic, government, and academic reports and studies which offer narratives of battlefield operations. This unit consists of 35 boxes and is broken down in into two parts. The first, Boxes 1-28, contains contemporary accounts of battlefield events. These materials span the years 1945-1975, with the bulk during the 1961-75 time period. They are indexed at the folder level in this finding aid. Boxes 29-35 house retrospective materials covering the same events, published between 1975 and 1994. These retrospective materials are not indexed in this finding aid. According to the system which Douglas Pike set up in the original collection, each year's files are broken into two catagories. The first is General Files and the second is a group of chronological files. The General Files are found at the beginning of the arrangement for the files of each individual year and are labelled as such. Pike's original idea was to put overview documentation's or grand studies of the year's major events in these files. However, these events may well be covered in the chronological files that follow for the time period in question. The difference is that in these later files the material tends to be more, reportorial, fragmented, and journalistic in nature. If one is studying some major event or turning point in the war it behooves the researcher to begin with the general files and work to the chronological. If working on a more minor event or topic, it makes more sense to begin with the chronological files and then turn to the general files for material giving perspective to these events to help the researcher set them within the larger picture of the major events of the war. In describing the Pike Collection, every effort was made to list all significant subjects or materials contained in a file. This was primarily done by thumbing through the folders and making notes as we went. Thus, it may appear to the researcher that subjects have been listed in this finding aid in the order which they appear in the folders. This is not strictly the case. The only accurate statement that can be made about the folder descriptions is that it they reflect the time period listed and subjects given to be contained in the folder. However, just because material on a topic is encountered early in searching the folder, does not mean that there is not similar material at the end. This may be so because the internal arrangement in the folder is chronological, not topical. To help the researcher, there is also a glossary that precedes the section of this guide containing the folder inventories/indexes.

Media Type:

Scope and Content:
There are approximately 4.5 linear feet in Unit 13. Major topics or events in Vietnamese history organize the unit. These include, but are not limited to the involvement of foreign powers in Vietnam, the Second World War, Dien Bien Phu, and the Geneva Conference. The history of the Indochinese Communist Party is a particularly lengthy section. Most of the material housed in the collection falls within the period of 1875 to 1954. Materials are generally arranged chronologically by the date the event in discussion occurred. Some anomalies result when a document addresses a lengthy timespan. When a single date is difficult to ascertain, the date of publication is used instead. Unit 13, The Early History of Vietnam, attempts to trace Vietnam's past from prehistoric times to 1954. Materials related to the Geneva Convention of 1954 conclude the chronological scope of Unit 13. Some pamphlets and government documents intersperse the bulk of the unit, which is composed mainly by book fragments, newspaper clippings, and magazine articles. The documentary support for The Pentagon Papers is a significant part of the unit's composition.
